Calhoun Isles
Area Summary
Calhoun Isles is in the western part of Minneapolis. The area has the Uptown Business District and is known for its Chain of Lakes, Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles, Lake Harriet, Brownie Lake and Cedar Lake. Millions of visitors visit these lakes every year making it a very popular destination. Activities include biking, walking, jogging, rollerblading and skiing around the lakes. There is also a twelve mile walk and bike path. (Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway)
Calhoun Isles is made up of nine neighborhoods, Bryn – Mawr, Kenwood, Lowry Hill, Cedar – Isles – Dean, East Isles, Lowry Hill East, West Calhoun, ECCO ( East Calhoun) and Carag. Nearby towns include Golden Valley, St. Louis Park and Edina.

Homes for Sale in Minneapolis’ Calhoun Isles Area
Neighborhood Description
The majority of homes in the area were built during the early 1900s and more sporadic going into the 1930s and 40s. Typically homes of this age have hardwood floors, fireplaces and period complemented fixtures and cabinets in the baths and kitchens. Prices for this area are pretty wide spread ranging from about $200k into the millions. The closer you are to the Chain of Lakes the higher the price of homes.
Uptown Area - Hennepin Avenue & West Lake St
Hennepin Avenue and Lake Street are main roads through Minneapolis and intersect at one of my favorite spots, Famous Daves. I like Famous Daves, not just for it’s food, but it’s great Blues Music as well. There is all kinds of shopping, food and services in this area. The majority of housing in this specific area is multi-family, which helps buffer the commercial area from the residential homes. Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles are near by as well. This is a great location for people that want to live in Minneapolis and be near all kinds of entertainment.
Chain of Lakes
Lake Calhoun is popular for fishing, wind surfing, swimming, sailing, canoeing, walking, jogging, biking and skating. Lake of the Isles is popular for walking, running, biking, Frisbee, picnics, nature views, canoeing and ice skating. There is also an off leash dog park on the south end of the park. Lake Harriet is also know for the same activities including summer concerts at the band shell. Brownie Lake is on the west side of Cedar Lake Parkway between I-394 and the Cedar Lake Trail. Cedar Lake has sandy beaches, which attract swimmers and beachgoers.
Attractions
Kenwood Park is located off West Franklin Avenue across from Kenwood School and Community Center. Kenwood Park is popular for its sunsets, sports, running, jogging, walking, biking, reading, sunbathing and picnicking.
Walker Art Center is know for its creative expression of artists and active audience. Focusing on visual, performing and media arts. The Walker has a global and diverse approach to creation, presentation, interpretation, collection and preservation of art.
Minneapolis Institute of Arts enriches the community by collecting, preserving and making outstanding works of art accessible.
The Minikahda Club is a private golf club overlooking Lake Calhoun.
Uptown
Uptown is a very popular commercial district in the Calhoun Isles area of Minneapolis. At the center is the Uptown Theater at the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and Lagoon Avenue. Uptown is known for shopping, food, entertainment and leisure.
Calhoun Squareis an indoor shopping mall located in Uptown. The mall is at the southeast corner of Hennepin Avenue and West Lake Street. The mall was built from a group of older buildings and construction was finished in 1983.
Uptown hosts an annual Art Fair during the first full weekend of August. Art includes paintings, sculptures, clothing, pottery, jewelry, glas and mixed media.
Neighborhood Details
The median home price in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of the Calhoun Isles area of Minneapolis is approximately $300K averaging three bedrooms and approximately 1,800 square feet. Most homes in Bryan Mawr were built in the early to mid 1900s with a few exceptions of some homes being built in later part of the 1900s. Some of the more expensive homes in Calhoun’s Bryn Mawr sell above $500,000. Some of their features include hardwood floors, master suite, large open rooms, vaulted ceilings and great views of downtown or the lakes. Kenwood, East Isles and Lowry Hill areas of Calhoun Isles has a higher median price of about $1,000,000 with similar features averaging four bedrooms and 3,500 square feet. Cedar – Isles – Dean area of Calhoun Isles is similar with home prices averaging around $500,000 with three bedrooms and 2,300 square feet. Lowry Hill East homes are more expensive in the north end of the neighborhood. The closer south to Lake Street the lower priced the home.
