Southwest

Area Summary

The Southwest area of Minneapolis is located in the Southwest corner of Minneapolis and it’s boundaries include Interstate 35W on the east, 36th Street West on the north, France Avenue on the west and Highway 62 on the south. Neighboring towns to this area include St. Louis Park to the northwest, Edina to the west and Richfield to the southeast. The Southwest area of Minneapolis is made up of nine neighborhoods, East Harriet, King Field, Lynnhurst, Tangletown, Windom, Kenny, Fulton, Linden Hills and Armatage.

Neighborhood Description

The majority of homes in the area were built during the early 1900s and more sporadic going into the 1930s and 40s. Typically homes of this age have hardwood floors, fireplaces and period complemented fixtures and cabinets in the baths and kitchens. Prices for this area are pretty wide spread ranging from about $200k into the millions. The closer you are to the Chain of Lakes the higher the price of homes.

Chain of Lakes

Lake Calhoun is popular for fishing, wind surfing, swimming, sailing, canoeing, walking, jogging, biking and skating. Lake of the Isles is popular for walking, running, biking, Frisbee, picnics, nature views, canoeing and ice skating. There is also an off leash dog park on the south end of the park. Lake Harriet is also know for the same activities including summer concerts at the band shell. Brownie Lake is on the west side of Cedar Lake Parkway between I-394 and the Cedar Lake Trail. Cedar Lake has sandy beaches, which attract swimmers and beachgoers.

Lyndale Farmstead is known for its soccer program and special events. The building is a neighborhood gathering place for many community meetings and popular for party rentals. The features include outdoor chess tables, tennis court, playground, playroom and skating rink.

Southwest’s Neighborhoods

The Linden Hills neighborhood is in the northwest corner of the Southwest area of Minneapolis. Linden Hills makes up the southern part of the Chain of Lakes with Lake Harriet and also includes Linden Hills Park and William Berry Park. East Harriet also makes up the southern part of the Chain of Lakes and share Lake Harriet with Linden HIlls and includes Jo Pond. King Field is the northeast neighborhood of Minneapolis’ Southwest area and includes Martin Luther King Park. Fulton and Lynhurst neighborhoods make up the last part of the south end of the Chain of Lakes around Lake Harriet and include parks Pershing Field an Lynhurst Park. Tangletown is also on the west side of the Southwest area of Minneapolis and includes Fuller Park. Armatage, Kenny and Windom make up the southern portion of the Southwest area and include Armatage Park, Kenny Park, Windom South Park and Grass Lake.
